Our team is seeking an economist with significant natural language processing (NLP) experience to join us in our mission to shed light on the ever-evolving world of work.
Position Overview:
As an Economist at the Burning Glass Institute, you will help build the architecture and analytics behind our market labor intelligence, coordinate research projects, and develop methodologies. You will work closely with our Managing Director of Innovation Solutions and Chief Economist to better understand the labor market through online and administrative data sources.
Key Responsibilities:
Data Science and Machine Learning: You should be comfortable using Python to process hundreds of millions of data points; using symbolic and statistical techniques, embeddings, LLMs, and other NLP methods to analyze and categorize raw data; and using SQL to work with our internal databases.
Data-Driven Research: You will use our data to advise or lead research projects and develop advanced methods. Some examples include predicting occupational automation risk, analyzing career trajectories, and developing frameworks for evaluating college degree alternatives.
Project Coordination: You will team up with a small group of data scientists and economists with the ambitious goal of developing state-of-the-art datasets on the labor market and producing thought-leading research. Being able to balance the ownership of some of our internal data infrastructure with project-based work will be a key capability.
Research Communication: Both internally, and externally, it will be important that you can communicate the results/methods of your work to individuals of varying levels of expertise.
Market Knowledge: Stay informed about trends and economic research relevant to US and global labor markets, contributing valuable insights and novel research ideas to our research efforts.
Basic Qualifications:
Master's degree in economics, data science, or similarly quantitative subject AND 2+ years of research or work experience using NLP methods
Experience in empirical economic research
Can demonstrate strong writing, communication, and presentation skills
Significant experience in using NLP methods to clean and categorize raw data
The ability to execute an independent research project with minimal guidance
Significant experience working with large datasets using SQL and Python.
Preferred Qualifications
Doctorate AND 2+ years of research or work experience using NLP
Background in labor economics, education, applied microeconomics, or econometrics
Significant knowledge of the US economy and labor market
Familiarity with common public-use data sets used for economic research such as those created by the Census and Bureau of Labor Statistics
