Data Scientist (Full Time)

Job Title: Data Scientist

Location: New York, NY (Remote)

Company: Burning Glass Institute

About Us:

The Burning Glass Institute (BGI) is a premier labor market analysis research center at the forefront of shaping discourse on workforce trends. We are dedicated to providing valuable insights into labor market dynamics, worker mobility, equity, talent development, job creation, and firm-level practices. Our team is seeking a data scientist with experience or interest in socioeconomic research to join us in our mission to shed light on the ever-evolving world of work.

Position Overview:

As a Data Scientist at the Burning Glass Institute, you will play a crucial role in building our organization’s data infrastructure and using this to conduct data-intensive research to analyze the labor market. You will use your data engineering, NLP, and Python/R coding skills to build classification models to turn our job postings and worker profile data into a state-of-the-art proprietary data source. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to act as a lead Data Scientist in consulting projects for companies, universities, and workforce agencies and developing impactful industry research publications. You will work in a small team of data scientists and engineers but will also be in close collaboration with our economists.

Key Responsibilities:

Data Infrastructure: The Burning Glass Institute is a growing organization, and you will be able to play a large role in shaping our in-house data infrastructure with access to a unique combination of economic and labor market data. You should be comfortable using Python/R to process hundreds of millions of data points, using LLMs and other NLP methods to analyze and categorize raw data, and using SQL to work with our internal databases.

Data Analysis: You will develop an in-house expertise of our data and use this to support or lead research projects. Some examples of this include predicting occupational automation risk, analyzing career trajectories, and developing frameworks for evaluating college degree alternatives. You will be an expert in cutting-edge data science and machine learning methods for economic research.

Project Coordination: Your core team will be a small group of data scientists and engineers with the ambitious goal of developing and continuously improving state-of-the-art datasets for understanding the labor market. This goal requires team players who can work independently to develop advanced data models and coordinate the output of these into a cohesive database. Being able to balance this responsibility with ongoing research projects will be a key capability.

Data Communication: Both internally, and externally, it will be important that you can communicate the results/methods of your work to individuals of varying levels of expertise. This will range from clear communication of the strengths and weaknesses of your data models to our economists who work with this data every day to data visualizations and research reports for sharing with invested and informed clientele.

Data Dashboarding: A key capability we’re building is the creation of data products for internal and external use. You will have the chance to build web applications and digital tools for bringing the insights from our data to life using frameworks like Dash or Shiny.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in data science, computer science, economics, or similarly quantitative subject AND 3+ years of data-science experience

  • OR Doctorate AND 1+ years of data-science experience

  • Significant experience in data wrangling and the application of NLP methods to cleaning and categorizing raw data.

  • Significant experience in analyzing and interpreting complex (structured and unstructured) datasets.

  • Significant experience in working with large datasets using Python.

  • Significant experience producing and explaining data analyses and data visualizations for a variety of audiences.

  • Some experience with economic research methodologies and related econometric and statistical tools

  • An interest and ability to learn how to use programmatic data dashboarding tools like Dash and Shiny

  • Detail-oriented approach with a strong commitment to data accuracy.

  • Effective time management skills to prioritize tasks, work efficiently, and meet project deadlines while maintaining the quality of work.

  • Ability to maintain significant overlap with Eastern Time (ET) working hours for effective collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in data-intensive work in an industry or academic setting.

  • Formal training in social or economic quantitative research (bonus if it’s labor-related).

  • A strong understanding of labor market dynamics, trends, and policies, both in the United States and globally.

  • Experience with SQL databases and working in AWS.

  • Experience building data dashboards.

  • Familiarity with common public-use data sets used for economic research such as those created by the Census and Bureau of Labor Statistics

  • The ability to attend in-person meetings and working sessions in our New York office is a plus.
